How do cows produce milk when not pregnant?

Animal Expert
Ask Q

NDRI scientists have injected non-pregnant and dry animals with progesterone and estrogen, the hormones that control milk production during pregnancy. Exotic cows usually respond well to injections of progesterone and estrogen in a 1: 5 ratio.

Do cows produce milk even if they are not pregnant?

Like humans, cows produce milk only after giving birth. Dairy cows must give birth to one calf a year in order to continue producing milk. Usually, artificial insemination is performed within 3 months after delivery.

Do cows naturally secrete lactic acid?

Cows do not continuously produce milk. Cows that stop producing milk are called "dry cows". They are "refreshed". That is, it will be bred again. After the calf (childbirth), the first milk is produced and given to the calf.
