Animal Expert
Ask Q

Donkey Colt has the potential to gel in the first 6 months of life, just before weaning. If you get an old Jack, that doesn't mean he can't gel, but he's more likely to bleed than a young animal after surgery.

At what age did the miniature horse gel?

As a rule (and that's a very rough rule of thumb!) I usually look like gelling between the first year and the 18th month of life. However, there are many exceptions. I once had to sort out the castration of a four month old foal as he started mounting his mother

How old is a suitable age for a gelding horse? mosquito?

As soon as you find out that you don't intend to keep the foal breeding, there is no reason to wait until he behaves like a stallion or becomes aggressive or difficult to manage. This is one of the reasons why the most popular age range for horse gelding is 6-12 months, or less than 1 year old.

What is the best age to gel Colt?

Our preference is to castrate the foal when it is 6-18 months old. This is because I feel that the younger the foal when castrated, the less problems it has. In general, young foals tend to recover faster from surgery and have fewer postoperative complications.

Is a gelled donkey a good pet?

Their natural curiosity, intellect, quiet and friendly nature make gelding an excellent pet for the whole family. Gelding is highly recommended for pets. Jack donkey is an intact breeding male donkey.
