What are slugs good for in the garden?

Animal Expert
Ask Q

The slug population is suitable for gardens. Slugs break down garden debris and turn it into nitrogen-rich fertilizers to nourish the soil (similar to worm composting). They are also a natural food source for many beneficial insects, birds, frogs, snakes, and toads.

Does the slug do anything useful?

Slugs and snails are very important. They feed all kinds of mammals, birds, slow worms, earthworms and insects, and they are part of the natural balance. Removing them upsets that balance and can do a lot of harm to us.

Are garden slugs beneficial?

Outside the garden, slugs and snails actually do useful things. They are important prey for other wildlife, recycling organic matter that helps make soil. However, in gardens and landscapes, slugs and snails can do considerable damage and often need to be controlled.

What is the purpose of the garden slugs?

They do a lot of damage to garden plants and crops, but they also help clear rotten vegetation and are themselves a valuable source of food for toads, slugs, beetles and birds.

Are all slugs bad for the garden?

Slugs are a wide range of animals that can cause problems in the garden and puncture leaves, stems, flowers, tubers and bulbs. They can damage a variety of plants throughout the year, but spring herbaceous saplings and new growth are at greatest risk.
