There are two types of dolphins in this family: Amazon river dolphins and Francis kana or La Plata dolphins. They have been found in South America. Amazon river dolphins are found in the Amazon and Orinoco basins of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. There are three types of South African dolphins: bottlenose dolphins, sinus dolphins, and long-beaked common dolphins. The South African dolphin species belonging to the family Delphinidae is actually a toothed whale. Amazon river dolphins, also known as pink river dolphins or bots, live only in freshwater. It is found in many of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru and Venezuela. It is a relatively abundant freshwater whale with an estimated population of tens of thousands. Kawadolkas in South Asia are native to the freshwater river systems of Nepal, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. They are found in the waterways connected to the Indus, the Bees, the Ganges and Brahmaputra, and the tributaries of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Nepal.


Genetic research over the last decade has made it possible to define the classification of river dolphin species in South America. Currently, four types of dolphins are proposed: Bufeo or Boto (Inia geoffrensis), Bolivia dolphin (Inia boliviensis), River dolphin Araguia (Inia araguiaensis), and tucuxi or gray dolphin (Sotalia fluviatilis).
