The sponge lacks organs and tissues, and all cells show considerable independence. The sponge consists of two single-cell-deep layers and an intermediate mesohyl (movable cells and extracellular matrix). The outer (sac) layer is composed of flat polygonal cells called pinacosites.

What are the three body layers of the sponge?

The body wall is composed of three layers: the outer layer of flat epidermal cells. An intermediate layer consisting of gelatinous substances and amoebic cells that move within the layer. What is the structure of the inner layer

sponge consisting of flagellar cells and choanocytes (also called choanocytes)?

Collagen: A major structural protein in various connective tissues of animals. Like all animals, sponges have collagen. Sponge spicules: Structural elements found in most sponges that provide skeletal-like structural support. Sponge spicules can be made of silica or calcium carbonate.
