Sika deer are tan to reddish brown and have dark dorsal stripes surrounded by white spots in summer. During the winter, their color is dark gray to black, with no spots or very faint.



How do you identify sika deer?

Sika has a heart-shaped white tail with a black upper edge, and the white tail has thin black vertical stripes. Red / brown in summer and gray / brown in winter with no spots. Seekas have stains in the summer and are larger than eggs. Roe has a distinctive black nose and white chin.

Where do sika deer live in the United States?

In North America, Texas and Maryland currently have the highest number of free-range sika deer (Cervus nippon), and Chincoteague Island, Virginia, has a declining population. There are very small populations that are little known in North Carolina and Kentuckies.

The main predators of sika deer include tigers, wolves, leopards and brown bears.

Is the sika deer native to the United Kingdom?

Sika deer are native to East Asia, but were introduced in 1860 in the Deer Park in the United Kingdom. It is now found in populations scattered throughout the UK and is the most common in Scotland. Cambria, Dorset and New Forest also have a significant population.
