What is the best water temperature for Nerite snails?

Animal Expert
Ask Q

Nerita albicilla breeds and lays eggs, but does not hatch because brackish water is required for the larvae to survive. When this happens, you can try to scrape off the snail eggs, or if you want to continue the breeding process, you can remove them to proper water conditions. The ideal water temperature for freshwater snails is between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit (22 to 28 degrees Celsius). Many brine snails require a similar temperature range. For example, bumblebee snails are most effective when the water is 72 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit (22 to 25 degrees Celsius). The Nerita albicilla snail comes from brackish waters in Africa and is fairly easy to care for. In order for them to survive and prosper, they need potential habitats, great aquarium companions, comprehensive diets, and helpful breeding grounds. Many people know that Nerite snails don't need much attention, so they ignore them altogether. Zebra Nelite snails have a striped pattern throughout the shell towards the center of the coil. The colors of the stripes are usually black and yellow, but the shades can vary. Tigernerite snails are similar to zebras, but much darker orange.

What do Nelite snails need to survive?

The first thing we need to cover is the water parameters. Nerita albicilla snails like water with a relatively high pH of 7.5-8.5 (higher this range is better) and a hardness of 5-12 (preferably towards the center of this range). This is important because if the PH and dKH are too low, snails can start puncturing the shell.

What is the optimum water temperature for snails?

Nerita albicilla snails accept a water temperature range of 65 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. In fact, they can take even warmer temperatures (not extreme, of course). At low temperatures, their metabolism slows down and they eat and move less. The optimum pH range is 7-8, which definitely prefers harder water.

What do snails need to survive in a new aquarium?

The most important factor for a new tank member to survive is water quality. Snails prefer hard water, which is rich in minerals that help make shells. The ideal water temperature depends on the type of snail.

What does the Nerite Zebra snail look like?

Zebra nelite snail. The basic colors range from dark golden to light brown, and greenish yellow to tan. The strip is uneven. There may be a large light ridge at the base of the shell. Various dark bands give the zebra snail a distinctive look.
