What type of body do sponges have?

Animal Expert
Ask Q

Body type: There are three body types of sponge: asconoid, syconoid, and leuconoid. The asconoid sponge is tubular and the central shaft is called the sponge coil. When you hit the bristles of the choanocytes, water is pushed into the sponge coil through the pores on the body wall. Choanocytes line the sponge coil and filter nutrients from the water.

Which is the most common body shape for sponges?

Lucon sponges are the most complex and most common of the sponge body forms. These sponges have multiple dermal holes and can have multiple oscrams. The opening leads to a canal leading to a chamber lined with choanocytes, which in turn leads to the current canal.

Does the sponge have an asymmetric body?

Only sponges (Sponge phylum) have an asymmetric body plan. Some animals begin their lives with one type of body symmetry, but develop a different type than the adult. For example, starfish are classified symmetrically, even though their adults are radially symmetrical.
