Animal Expert
Ask Q

When you go out to look for females during the mating season, the herd divides. In winter the deer are together and share the same well-worn road. Being together also protects them from the icy winds.

Do deer hang out in groups?

In healthy and diverse age-structured populations, older deer may form an exclusive single group and younger deer may form separate groups. These groups unite in spring and summer and continue to feed, sleep and care for each other until the end of summer. They can be formed as an additional method of protection.

Do deer stay in the same area for the rest of their lives?

The home range is the entire area where deer live. On average, these are typically about 650 acres or a square mile. However, keep in mind that the home range is not a square. As for the core area, this is where most deer spend most of their time.
