Why do hairless dogs exist?

Animal Expert
Ask Q

Hairless dogs are dogs with a genetic predisposition to hairlessness and hair loss. There are two known types of genetic hairlessness, dominant and recessive. The dominant form is caused by ectoderm dysplasia as a result of mutations in the FOXI3 autosomal gene.

Is a hairless dog a thing?

Well, I have almost no hair. Some puppies have fur spots on their heads, tails and even legs, while others have whiskers and eyelashes. The advantage of hairless breeds such as the rare Peruvian Inca Orchid, Xoloitzcuintli, Chinese Crested, Argentinian Pira, and American Hairless is that shedding is restricted.

What is missing from a hairless dog?

The "hairless" breed is a truly hairless dog and is probably the top candidate in terms of a truly hypoallergenic breed. No hair (except for fine eyebrows and beard) and very little sebum.

What is the purpose of Xoloitzcuintli?

In ancient Mexico, Xoloitzcuintli was sacred. Dogs were frequently sacrificed and placed in the grave of their recently deceased owner. It was thought to help guide the owner's soul safely to the land of the dead. They were also thought to cure a variety of health conditions.
